Roofing - Roofing Questions
1.20 How do I know what kind of corrugated roofing to get?

Q. Hi, I found documentation to the effect that the corrugated steel roofing on my house and apartment was replaced in 1983. It's never been maintained since, and of course there is major problems with it. Leaks galore, wood underneath rotted in places, and other joys. The corrugated steel roofing at Home Depot is 24 grains. I don't know what that means. What does it mean if steel roofing is "24 grains?" Is that good? Also, I see these newfangled plastic roofing products. Are they any good for a harsh tropical clime like mine?

A. Check your local roofing supplier . Don't go to Home Cheapo for advice .

1.20 What would be the easiest way to remove composition roofing off my home?

Q. I had a company come out and quote me 2000.00 for about 1200sq ft. so i figured i'd rather do it myself. The roofing is about 25yrs old, not too mossy but there is some water damage.

A. Industrial Scrapers If you can get a skip close enough to you house, you could hire a uload skip throwing the tiles straight into the skip saving picking the tile up off the ground, in the pass we have used a sheet of metal roofing for a makeshift ram but this works better for tiled roofs.

1.20 Is anyone looking for construction work to be done?

Q. A great Contractor. He works in Chicago land area. Does top notch, TOP Quality Work including: stair, floors, bedrooms, bathrooms, tiles, painting, outside/inside work, roofing, siding, and door and windows. Great Work . Even better Price. If you want the contact info, feel free to Email back.

A. You may want to post on Craigslist

1.20 What are my options if a contractor does not honor his contract?

Q. In North Carolina, if a roofing contractor did not complete the job satisfactorily and I have a contract with a lifetime guarantee and my roof is leaking still three months after the job is supposedly done... what agencies can I report him to?

A. Civil suit or arbitration, small business association, better business bureau and if you have enough documentation the DA's office for fraud and misrepresentation.

1.20 Illinois home builder wants direct link to Co.s working in the Katrina area presently.?

Q. 30 years home building/improvement experience. 50 years old. State (IL) licensed roofer (limited)). Want full time work with, established company with solid background. Not afraid of hands on work/working hard...prefer it. Do not need to be a boss. Have no problems taking orders or doing what I am told. Have been working, almost exclusively, for my brother-in-law as a sub-contractor,building homes, the last seven longer my brother-in-law.This part of northwestern Illinois was primarily an industrial manufacturing area, most jobs are gone now. We have seen a steady down turn in new home starts. Brother-in-law was stationed at Ft. Polk LA.. Father-in-law winters in central FL.Have been to both areas several times. Wife is considering accepting early retirement offer. We are looking at our options. Serious responses only.Thank you

1.20 How would I go about starting a small construction business in Mississippi (1 person being me)?

Q. Looking at maybe building decks. fences, etc.... where I can work for myself. One possibility is to work for Lowe's as an installer. Lowe's requires general commercial insurance. Example; ------------------------------------------ I. Commercial General Liability (A) Minimum Limits: $300,000 per Each Occurrence $300,000 General Aggregate Annual (can include umbrella liability limits) $300,000 Products - Completed/Operations Aggregate Minimum Limits for Gas and Generator Installers are $1,000,000/$2,000,000/2,000,000 & Roofing Installers $1,000,000/$1,000,000/$1,000,000 ----------------------- So my questions would be; 1) Where do I get commercial insurance from in Mississippi? 2) Were, how, and do I need to get a business license? 3) What other additional information should I know? I may decide to expand and take on employees at a later time,

A. Go to HTTP:// and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a volunteer SCORE counselor. They will guide you through the process. SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide and is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). 1.20 I would like to build a home. What is the least expensive way to build? I am a licensed electrician/plumber.?

A. A square or rectangular two story frame house with vinyl siding is probably the cheapest but durable way to build a house. Two stories, gives you more square footage with less foundation and roofing. It can also reduce the cost of wire and plumbing. As you know if you locate all of the plumbing on both floors close together the amount of pipe is less. A rectangular or square house is easier and faster to frame with fewer complications. Vinyl siding is inexpensive, durable and can be very attractive. It also needs no painting. Take a look at the houses Habitat for Humanity builds. There are some good clues there. You don't have to be quite that plain in your design but they usually go for the more economical design they can.

1.20 Can you use siding on a roof with a normal pitch, instead of roofing materials?

Q. We are putting a new roof on our garage and doing the work ourselves. We want to put on a metal roof as we did on our house a few years ago. However, I would like to find something more decorative than just the plain metal roof, since the garage & roof are in close proximity to our deck and is very visible from the house. We looked into the new metal shakes, etc., but they are very costly. So before we just give up and go with the plain metal roofing sheets, I was wondering if we could find some decorative siding (vinyl, etc) and put it on the roof instead of the sheets of plain metal roofing. The roof will be going over an existing shingle roof that is starting to lose a lot of it's shingles. Would the siding be able to shed water, snow, etc. like a metal roof would? We live in Indiana. What do you think?

A. Nope, and if the shingles are deteriorating that badly you really should strip them off and check out the sheething underneath. Chances are the plywood is also shot and needs replacing.
